Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly celebrates Emlou Vargas, a sixth-grade resource teacher at Spring Lake Middle School, for recently winning the prestigious Math 180® National Awards category through HMH (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Company).
The 180 Awards honor the outstanding achievements of students and educators who have demonstrated exceptional growth and perseverance through HMH’s Read 180® and Math 180® intervention programs. These awards recognize students who have overcome significant obstacles to achieve academic success, as well as the dedicated educators who support and inspire them in the classroom.
"As an Exceptional Children's professional, we salute our teacher [Vargas] for implementing CCS' specifically designed instruction program with our middle school students at Spring Lake Middle School," said Dr. Ayanna Jones Richard, the executive director for CCS Exceptional Children's Services. "Ms. Vargas has shown phenomenal work ethic in implementation and has supported students in making progress toward their IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals and has obtained remarkable success utilizing the Math 180® program."
Recipients of the 180 Awards are nominated by educators, coaches, intervention specialists, administrators or others familiar with their remarkable work. Winners are selected based on a range of criteria, including academic and personal growth, innovative projects, contributions to the school community, leadership and advocacy for positive change.
"Ms. Vargas is a dedicated educator that can easily adapt to meet the needs of her students by inspiring her students to rise above their challenges in the classroom and beyond," said Dr. Richard. "Her dedication has proven to be nothing less than stellar."
