Cafeteria staff member recognized for long-time service to CCS

Genia (Eugenia) Bateman, a purchasing specialist in Cumberland County Schools’ (CCS) Child Nutrition Services (CNS) department, was honored by the Cumberland County Board of Education today for an extraordinary milestone—50 years of continuous service.

Bateman began her career on Feb. 26, 1975, before the merger of the city and county school systems. In the five decades that followed, she became a steady and humble force behind the scenes, spending 48 of her 50 years in CNS. After the merger, she spent two years as the receptionist at the Educational Resource Center, then returned to CNS. She has worked under seven executive directors and at least seven superintendents throughout her career, offering continuity, grace and unwavering dedication.

After retiring in 2005 with 30 years of service, Bateman immediately returned in a part-time capacity—never missing a beat. Her knowledge, calm demeanor and behind-the-scenes leadership have long made her a cornerstone of the CNS team.

This week, the CNS department has worked to celebrate her remarkable legacy. Her colleagues decorated her desk and joined her in a heartfelt celebration within the department. Still, recognizing this milestone would not have been complete without formal recognition from the Board of Education—a fitting tribute to her loyalty and deep commitment to CCS students and staff.

“Fifty years of continuous and dedicated service is an amazing level of commitment that is rare,” said C. Beth Maynard, executive director of Child Nutrition Services. “Ms. Bateman serves as the roots of our department, keeping us grounded and guiding us. She possesses knowledge capital that you can't buy. All of us in the department are grateful to work with her.”

CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr. also offered his gratitude. “Ms. Bateman’s unwavering service over the past 50 years is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on an entire school system,” said Dr. Connelly. “We thank her for 50 years of remarkable service and appreciate her continued dedication to the Child Nutrition Services department.”

Though she tends to shy away from the spotlight, Bateman’s story continues to shine—a testament to endurance, heart and deep devotion that will inspire for years to come.
