Yesterday, Cumberland County Schools (CCS) proudly hosted its Sixth Annual Veterans Day Program at the Dr. William "Bill" Harrison Educational Resource Center, honoring the dedication and service of the district’s distinguished professionals who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Over 100 CCS employees, Board members, JROTC Cadets and community members came together to honor the courage, selflessness and dedication of CCS veterans who have safeguarded our nation’s freedoms. The event highlighted CCS’s commitment to recognizing its employees who continue to serve their communities and classrooms with the same dedication they showed in uniform.

Brigadier General Charles W. Morrison of the North Carolina National Guard delivered an impactful keynote address, sharing reflections and stories that emphasized the impact that educators have on soldiers. His words resonated with those present, as he acknowledged the roles that veterans have within the district and thanked them for their service. In addition, Cadet Lieutenant Commander Reulian Chance-Rodriguez, Executive Officer of the Gray’s Creek High School NJROTC, performed the national anthem, setting a solemn and respectful tone for the ceremony.

CCS Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, spoke about the sacrifices veterans make. "Veterans Day offers us a special opportunity to salute all American veterans, thank them for their service and recognize the sacrifices they’ve made to protect our country," said Connelly. "These brave individuals have missed birthdays, anniversaries and countless family moments, standing on the front lines and often placing themselves in harm’s way for our protection."

Cumberland County Board of Education Chairwoman, SFC (Ret.) Deanna Jones, highlighted the impact veterans make, honoring CCS employees who have served. "Your contributions as veterans are woven into the fabric of our freedom, a legacy that each of us benefits from daily," said Jones. "The courage, resilience and integrity you exemplify are gifts you continue to share as you support and inspire our young people."

Touching performances by CCS students and educators were a highlight of the evening. As the event came to a close, veterans were recognized as the service medley played for each military branch as excited voices sang along.
