Join PWC and Sustainable Sandhills on Saturday, April 20, for the screening of Chasing Ice, a documentary by acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog. While on assignment for National Geographic to capture images to tell the story of the Earth’s changing climate, Balog’s mission became to change the tide of history by gathering undeniable evidence of our changing planet. His videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. Chasing Ice depicts a photographer trying to deliver evidence and hope to our carbon-powered planet. Chasing Ice has won over 43 awards at film festivals around the world including Best Documentary Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Read more »

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the nation’s highest honor for mathematics and science teachers. Administered for the White House by the National Science Foundation, this national award allows outstanding mathematics and science teachers to be recognized for their subject area content knowledge and their ability to motivate students. Eight North Carolina public schools were recently named 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. These schools are among 219 public and 50 private schools to be recognized for helping all students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction released the 2011-2012 ABC’s of Public Education on August 2, 2012. The results show Cumberland County Schools are making great strides in student achievement and increasing the graduation rate.
Cumberland County Schools saw an increase in proficiency in every subject and every grade. Tested subjects included: Reading in grades 3-8, Mathematics in grades 3-8, Science in grades 5 and 8, Algebra 1 in grades 8-12, English 1 in grades 8 and 9, and Biology in grades 9-12. Of the schools in Cumberland County, 91% met at least the expected growth standard. Of these schools, 62% met the high growth standard. Read more »
