Fayetteville, NC – When T.C. Berrien Elementary students relocated to W.T. Brown Elementary for the remainder of the school year, it was a huge adjustment for everyone. Heather Gum, a kindergarten teacher at Berrien, stepped up to the plate, volunteering to temporarily drive the bus needed to transport students back to T.C. Berrien Elementary for Prime Time after-school care.

According to Susan Hunt, an assistant principal at the school, Gum has gone above the call of duty during a challenging time for the school. For her excellence, Gum has been selected as the Cumberland County Schools’ February Extra Mile Award recipient. Gum will receive a plaque and be recognized at the regular monthly Cumberland County Board of Education meeting on Feb. 11, 2020.

Based on the district’s core values, which are part of CCS’ Strategic Plan 2024, the Extra Mile Award is designed to acknowledge employees who demonstrate a sustained high level of performance and inspire others to do their best.

Any permanent full-time or part-time employee is eligible for this monthly recognition program. Nominations can be submitted here: https://tinyurl.com/y4q4gzc9. Nominations are due by the 15th of each month. To learn more about CCS’ Extra Mile Award, visit www.extramileaward.ccs.k12.nc.us.
