Fayetteville, NC – For the past 10 years, the Cumberland County Register of Deeds team, led by J. Lee Warren, Jr., has gone above and beyond to help homeless students in Cumberland County Schools (CCS), coordinating an annual countywide school supply drive. Under Warren’s leadership, the team has donated more than 5,000 book bags stuffed with school supplies for students in need.

For his dedication to the students of CCS, Warren is the first recipient of CCS’ Committed Community Support Award. Warren will receive a plaque and be recognized at the regular monthly Cumberland County Board of Education meeting on Feb. 11, 2020.

“Mr. Warren has a heart for the citizens of our community and was touched when one of his former staff members learned about the number of homeless children in the school system,” said Pamela S. Story, social work coordinator and homeless liaison for CCS, who nominated him. “Through his positive influence in the community, hundreds of citizens—individually or through companies, businesses, and organizations—donated funds, supplies, and time to help support ‘the least of these’ in CCS.”

Although Warren is involved in many community activities, planning for the school supply drive starts as soon as one drive ends. One year, when Warren found out that the number of homeless students changed because of a hurricane, he immediately went to work, providing more than 100 additional book bags to ensure all children were served.

“Although humble, and one who gives all of the credit to his wonderful staff and the community, I would like to recognize Mr. Lee Warren as a true committed community member who loves Fayetteville, NC, Cumberland County Schools, and all of its citizens,” said Story.

Any individual or organization that supports CCS is eligible for the Committed Community Support Award, including volunteers, parents, mentors, businesses, faith partners and community groups.

Nominations can be submitted here: http://bit.ly/31dMVZl. The CCS’ Committed Community Support committee will review nominations each month and select one winner. Nominations are due by the 15th of each month.
