Fayetteville, NC – Following the recommendation of Superintendent Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., the Cumberland County Board of Education approved the hiring of a new director of CCS’ Exceptional Children during Tuesday’s Board meeting.

Ayanna Richard, who is currently a special education senior administrator in the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), will serve as the director of Exceptional Children in the district. “As a person who is passionate about educating students, I am looking forward to supporting the work of Cumberland County Schools,” said Richard. “I am thrilled to bring fresh ideas, a spirit of collaboration and a diverse educational background to help facilitate progress toward the next level of teaching and learning for all students. I appreciate and embrace the opportunity to serve the district in this capacity.”

The seasoned educator has served as the special education coordinator in Charlottesville City Schools (VA) and an assistant principal in the Louisa County Public Schools (VA). She began her career working as a special programs teacher in Vance and Wake counties.
