Fayetteville, NC – Every day across Cumberland County Schools (CCS), employees work hard and dedicate their time and talents to support the district’s students and schools. To recognize the contributions of employees to the overall mission of the district, CCS has created the Extra Mile Award.

Selima Sims, the head custodian at Terry Sanford High School, has been named the first recipient of CCS’ Extra Mile Award. She was nominated by Thomas Hatch, principal at Terry Sanford, because of her willingness to collaborate and work as a team with other staff members.

Sims received the good news today while working at her school. Ruben Reyes, the associate superintendent of CCS’ Human Resources, stopped by Terry Sanford today with balloons to make the surprise announcement and invite her to the next Board of Education meeting.

“I’m proud of my school, and I take pride in what I do,” said Sims after receiving the good news. “I want to keep a good, clean, and nice school for the kids and the teachers as well. I want it to look really presentable when they arrive in the mornings, so they feel at home.”

Sims will receive a plaque and be recognized by the Cumberland County Board of Education at the September 10 meeting. A plaque featuring her as September’s Extra Mile Award winner will be displayed in administrative buildings across Cumberland County. “Ms. Sims worked tirelessly with her staff this summer to have our building ready for CCS’ Beginning Teacher Orientation,” said Hatch. “She has been a true facilitator of teamwork and collaboration in a very tough and many times thankless job. We love Ms. Sims and appreciate her hard work and dedication.”

Based on the district’s core values, which are part of CCS’ Strategic Plan 2024, the Extra Mile Award is designed to acknowledge employees who demonstrate a sustained high level of performance and inspire others to do their best.

Any permanent full-time or part-time employee is eligible for this monthly recognition program. Nominations can be submitted here: Nomination Form – CCS’ Extra Mile Award. The CCS’ Extra Mile Award committee will review nominations each month and select one winner. Nominations are due by the 15th of each month.
