Amazing Acts (March 2019) - Melendez & CochraneFayetteville – Each month through Cumberland County Schools’ Amazing Acts of Character recognition program, schools are asked to nominate students who display character above and beyond expected behavior. Three students were recently selected from individual school nominations for displaying ‘amazing acts of character’ and will be recognized during the Cumberland County Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of CCS’ Central Services building:

Justice Cochrane, 10th grader at Westover High School (WOHS) –
According to WOHS Assistant Principal Travis Stroud, Justice is an outstanding student who recently exhibited the
character traits of responsibility and trustworthiness after finding a wallet at his bus stop that contained $700 in cash and various credit cards. Stroud said the 16-year-old turned the wallet into one of his teachers, who then took it to the office. Fortunately, the authorities were able to locate the wallet’s owner. Justice’s high level of honesty has since garnered him recognition from several media outlets and Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis Wright. The Sheriff recently visited Westover High to recognize and present Justice with a certificate and a special commemorative coin.

Christine Melendez and Alex Richardson, seniors at Cross Creek Early College High School (CCECHS) –
CCECHS Principal Patsy Patrick said that Christine and Alex recently displayed integrity and honesty when a malfunctioning vending machine on Fayetteville State University’s campus began spewing coins. According to Patrick, both students used their shirts to collect and hold the coins. Once the machine finished releasing the coins, they took the money to the office to return it to the University. “Christine and Alex displayed a level of integrity and
honesty that serves as a model not only to their high school peers, but to adults and all people,” said Patrick.

The Amazing Acts of Character Committee selects winners based on school nominations. The winners are then recognized at the regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education, where they are presented a special trophy and certificate.
