Dignitaries stand ready to cut the ribbon opening the new fire station(Fayetteville, N.C.) — The media and public were invited to the ribbon cutting for the new Fire Station 12 on Thursday, May 31 at 10 a.m. The new station is located at 911 Hope Mills Road, adjacent to J.W. Coon Elementary School.

The land for the station was donated to the City of Fayetteville by Cumberland County Schools. Construction began on the structure on July 24, 2017, just following a groundbreaking ceremony on July 19, 2017.

“We are excited about opening the doors of our new Fire Station 12,” Fire Chief Ben Major said. “The new facility includes updated features needed for today’s fire service operations and resources, including our fire personnel. Even more exciting is the fact that the new location not only helps us to provide quicker services to the surrounding communities in the district, but it enables us to forge a great relationship with our new neighbors: The students and faculty of J.W. Coon Elementary School. We thank the City and Cumberland County Schools officials for enabling this to happen.”

The current Fire Station 12 was built in 1956 and is located at 307 Hope Mills Road. The station was acquired by the City of Fayetteville in 2004 as part of an annexation that brought in county fire stations 7, 11 and 17. The current Fire Station 12 does not comply with current standards set by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Response time data indicated that the current station was not situated at a location to be the most efficient for the neighborhoods it serves. The station serves Gallup Acres, Lafayette Village, Montclair, Oakdale, South Hills, Ashton Forest, Quail Ridge, Queensdale and Evergreen Estates.

The new fire station is compliant with NFPA, ADA and OSHA requirements and will be more centrally located to the neighborhoods it serves. The building is approximately 10,000 square feet with two apparatus bays, a community/training room, a decontamination room, a kitchen and a fitness room. The architectural contract on the structure was awarded to Gordon Johnson Architecture in 2016 in the amount of $328,300. The construction contract was awarded to M&E Contracting, Inc. during the June 12, 2017, City Council meeting in the amount of $3,240,675.
