Board Members Announces
the School System’s New Superintendent
In a special meeting this afternoon, the Cumberland County Board of Education approved and announced Dr. Marvin Connelly, Jr., as the district’s new Superintendent.
He currently serves as the Chief of Staff and Strategic Planning in the Wake County Public School system. Dr. Connelly has worked in the Wake County Public Schools as a teacher assistant, teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent in addition to his current role. Previously, he also served as an officer in the U.S. Army (82nd Airborne Division).
Hundreds of school system employees, community members, and the media crowded into the Board Room of the Central Services’ Building for an opportunity to see and meet the new superintendent after his remarks:
“I am honored and humbled by the confidence that the Board has put in me by selecting me to serve as the new superintendent of the Cumberland County Schools. I look forward to providing continued support and leadership to foster student success and excellent outcomes. Together with the students, parents, teachers, system leaders, community partners, and the Board, we will establish a strategic plan to attain new levels of excellence for all of the students in the Cumberland County Schools. We must graduate college and career-ready students who can collaborate, communicate, think critically, and who are creative so that they can compete in an increasingly interconnected world.”
Dr. Connelly succeeds former superintendent Dr. Frank Till, effective July 1, 2018. CCS’ Associate Superintendent of Auxiliary Services Tim Kinlaw has served as the interim superintendent since June 2017.
