Cumberland County Board of Education
The Cumberland County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 6:30 p.m., in the Central Services Board Room, with the following board members present: Carrie Sutton, Susan Williams, Porcha McMillan, Donna Vann, Greg West, Judy Musgrave, Rudy Tatum, Alicia Chisolm and Peggy Hall. Others present were Interim Superintendent Tim Kinlaw, Associate Superintendents Betty Musselwhite, Clyde Locklear, Ruben Reyes, Ron Phipps and Mary Black; Board Attorney David Phillips; Ft. Bragg representative, representatives of the principals association, media representative, district PTA representative, representatives of the NCAEOP, representatives of retired CCS employees associations and representatives of the teacher assistants association.
The Board RECOGNIZED Bruce Griffin, Gabriel DeMasi and Jacob Mabe for their Amazing Acts of Character.
The Board RECOGNIZED Chip Lucas as the NC Career and Technical Education Administrator of the Year
The Board RECOGNIZED Mellody Chalmers for being appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Access to Sound Basic Education (Ms. Chalmers was unable to attend tonight)
The Board RECOGNIZED Lametris Benbry and Sheila Burke for ‘Kudos Saving Lives’. Both individuals came to the aid of children that were choking.
The Board heard from twelve speakers during the Public Forum portion of the meeting:

Upon a motion by Susan Williams, seconded by Carrie Sutton, the Administrative Recommendations were approved unanimously by the Board.
(This item could not be approved on the consent agenda because we did not have enough Personnel Committee members present to approve at the Personnel Committee meeting)

14.01 Superintendent’s Update – Mr. Tim Kinlaw
Mr. Kinlaw shared that he recently met with county officials regarding the GenX issue. Even though our schools tested below the level of concern, we will continue to provide bottled water to those schools. (Gray’s Creek Elementary and Alderman Road Elementary) Discussions will continue as we work towards a solution. Mr. Kinlaw will provide updates as they become available.
Mr. Kinlaw invited everyone to support Cape Fear High School as they travel to Wilmington Friday evening. CFHS is our final team in the state football playoffs.

14.03 Chairman’s Update – Greg West
Mr. West congratulated Porcha McMillan for receiving a Certificate of Merit, Judy Musgrave for receiving a Certificate of Achievement and Carrie Sutton for receiving an Award of Distinction for their training during the 2016-2017 academic year. Additionally, congratulations to the board for winning the Gold Bell award from NCSBA for training during the same academic year.
Mr. West invited everyone to participate in the Public Forum to be held on Nov 30th at 5:00 pm. The Board welcomes input from the community as they seek to hire a new superintendent.
He thanked everyone for attending the meeting tonight and hopes to see everyone again next month.
