November is Native American Heritage MonthThe celebration of National American Indian Heritage Month has happened every November since a resolution was signed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990.  How did this month-long celebration begin?

It began as a one-day celebration to pay homage to America’s First People. The first state to recognize American Indian Day was New York-in 1916.

Dr. Arthur Parker, (Seneca Nation) director of the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Rochester, New York was one the first advocates of American Indian Day. He convinced the Boy Scouts of America to set aside one day each year to honor the country’s “First Americans.”  What began as a one-day event, is now a month occurrence.

On November 1, residents throughout the country began the celebration of the rich and diverse culture of America’s first people. There are 3.2 million Native Americans, 562 federally recognized tribes, and 500 state recognized tribes living in the United States.  North Carolina is home to 7 state-recognized tribes and 1 federally recognized tribe.

This month-long acknowledgment serves as an opportunity to educate Americans about the various tribes that have inhabited this land for thousands of years long before the pilgrims came ashore.  It’s an opportune time to engage in conversations about the state of affairs many native people have faced and continue to face on a daily basis.

The Cumberland County Schools’ Office of Indian Education and schools across the district have planned special events throughout the month. Join us in celebrating and observing November-American Indian Heritage Month.
