Image of 2017 Outstanding Educator Award Winners l-r Reames, Edwards, Anderson, Simmons and May - Feb 15 -2017Fayetteville – The Wells Fargo Outstanding Educator Award recognizes and helps foster excellence in education by presenting two teachers and one administrator in the Cumberland County Schools a $1,000 grant to implement a special educational project at their respective schools.

Greg Reames, Cape Fear Market President of Wells Fargo, presented this year’s awards and an engraved hand worked glass apple to the three educators during the Feb. 14 Cumberland County Board of Education meeting. The winners were as follows:

Elementary Teacher Award WinnerTonya Anderson, a teacher at Alderman Road Elementary School, plans to use her grant money to fund the “Coding with Spheros” project.  Through the project, kindergarten, first-grade, and second-grade students will use coding strategies and program their Spheros (robot) to create tasks and share them with others.

Secondary Teacher Award WinnerLatisha Edwards, a teacher at Westover Middle School, will implement the “Not Just Going through the Motion!” project. Grant funds will be used to purchase Calculator-Based Ranger-2 Motion Sensors to allow math and science students to construct and demonstrate functional relationships associated with motion and analyze graphs of various functions.

Administrator Award Winner – Sharonne Simmons, the assistant principal at Montclair Elementary School, will use the funds to support a joint project with Douglas Byrd Middle School students.  The funds will purchase iPads that the students will use in improving their study skills and academic achievement with an integration of technological and digital resources.
