New Board Chair & Vice Chair Named
Members of the Board elected Greg West as the chair and Donna Vann as the vice chair of the Cumberland County Board of Education. Both will serve a one-year term. Special recognition for their leadership along with a gavel and plaque were given to the outgoing chair, Susan Williams, and vice chair, Carrie Sutton, respectively.

Oath of Office
Returning School Board members Donna Vann, Alicia Chisolm, Susan Williams, and Carrie Sutton along with newly elected Board members Porcha McMillan and Peggy Hall took the oath of office, while their family members, friends, and supporters watched. The oaths were given by the Honorable Edward Pone, Talmage Baggett and Luis J. Olivera.

Latin Honors System Adopted
The Board approved Policy Code 3450 which states that “all Cumberland County high schools will utilize a Latin Honors system to recognize the distinguished academic achievement of its graduates.” Beginning the 2016-2017 school year, all high schools in the district will use the following criteria to designate honors:
Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honor) – 4.250 +
Magna Cum Laude (With Great Honor) – 4.00 to 4.249
Cum Laude (With Praise) – 3.75 to 3.999
While high school principals may designate a valedictorian and salutatorian, they will be encouraged to highlight the academic achievement of Latin Honors graduates.
Student Government leaders Joshua Jensen from Pine Forest High School and Kerrington Barnes from Westover High School served as the ex-officio members of the Cumberland County Board of Education during the meeting. Ex-officio members are given the opportunity to make comments, ask questions, and give input on any topic brought before the Board.

Betty Musselwhite, the associate superintendent of School Support Services, introduced to the Board the following group of honorees:
Principal Jeanna Daniels from Beaver Dam Elementary School, Principal Patsy Patrick from Cross Creek Early College High School, Principal Dan Krumanocker from Cumberland Polytechnic High School, and Principal Scott Pope from Jack Britt High School – The four local schools were recently recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for receiving an “A” grade for academic performance during the 2015-2016 school year.
