Department of Defense Education ActivityFayetteville, NC – The Cumberland County School (CCS) system is pleased to announce the receipt of a grant award from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) totaling $1.5 million for the second consecutive year.  The five-year grant titled “Staying on Course to True North: Supporting Our Heroes Most Valued Treasures” will provide social and emotional support to military dependent students in the CCS.

The grant will increase the level of social and emotional support for military dependent students at five middle schools and four high schools by providing two Military Student Transition Consultants (MSTC) and Student2Student (S2S)/Junior Student2Student (JS2S) programming at targeted schools.  Military Student Transition Consultants will assess the social-emotional needs of incoming or referred military students, and transition action plans will be developed and monitored. Additionally, “Staying on Course to True North” will support CCS’ faculty and administrators by providing professional development that addresses behavior issues and the needs of the military dependent students and families.

Military dependent students typically attend between seven to nine schools before they graduate, moving approximately every two years. Each relocation brings with it the numerous problems associated with transitioning between school systems. These challenges come along with the already existing emotional distresses children face when a parent is absent for long periods of time, usually deployed to a dangerous destination.

The Cumberland County School system is the fourth largest Local Education Agency (LEA) in North Carolina, serving 51,302 culturally diverse students of which 12,815 (24.98%) are military dependents.
