Go Green InitiativeCliffdale Elementary was honored in June as the first Green School to be awarded the ‘Walk the Walk’, the most outstanding Green Certified School in Cumberland County.  This outstanding elementary school won with their unique approach to making sure their school’s climate reflected the commitment to our sustainable future.

This year was the first year Sustainable Sandhills and the Go Green Initiative focused on Green Certified Schools looking for leaders of sustainability in our school community.  The nominees were from all over the county and each had a remarkable Green School program at their school.  These standout programs meant the competition was stiff. Those nominated were: Alma Easom, Beaver Dam, Brentwood, Cashwell, Cliffdale, E.E. Miller, Ferguson Easley, Gallberry Farm, J.W. Coon, Lillian Black, Loyd Auman and Stoney Point.

At the luncheon, nominees were represented by student green team members, custodians, green team leaders and principals.  All schools we recognized, because when you go into the schools you see elements that indicate their school takes sustainability seriously.  Gloria Lengel stated, ”These are the schools I don’t worry about.  They are always trying to reduce their carbon footprint.”  We look forward to this next year at the competition we will see.
