A report on Board action
Cumberland County Board of Education
Regular Meeting

January 13, 2015

New Board Member Selected
From the slate of four candidates vying for the District #4 seat, members of the Board voted that long-time educator Donna Vann should serve alongside them. Vann will fill the unexpired term of former Board member Larry Lancaster, who was recently elected as a Cumberland County Commissioner. Vann will serve two years.

Differentiated Pay Proposal OK’d
The Board approved the Differentiated Pay Proposal from the Cumberland County Schools. The N.C. Legislature has required all school districts to submit a proposal highlighting a differentiated teacher pay plan that would work for hard-to-staff schools or hard-to-staff subject areas. From those proposals submitted, several will be selected and the school systems will be allowed to implement their proposal plans using the Educational Endowment Fund as the funding source.

Superintendent Makes Report to Board
Dr. Till informed the Board that his participation in today’s news conference in Raleigh presenting “North Carolina’s Guide to Strengthening Our Public Schools” was successful. The document details strategies that will greatly reduce the amount of testing for North Carolina students. The publication will be posted on the CCS’ Website in the coming weeks.

Board Gives Proclamation Approval
The Board pledged its support in proclaiming February 2 – 6 as 2015 National School Counseling Week in the Cumberland County Schools. As stated in the proclamation, the Board will continue to “support comprehensive developmental school counseling programs, which are considered an integral part of the educational process that enables all students to achieve success in school.”

Appreciation Shown to School Board Members
In observance of January as School Board Appreciation Month, representatives from the Cumberland County Association of Educators (CCAE) and the Cumberland County Association of Principals and Assistant Principals presented tokens of appreciation to members of the School Board for their service to the CCS.

Recognitions
Student government leaders Kristel Black from Gray’s Creek High School and Marcus Battle from Seventy-First High School served as the ex-officio members of the Cumberland County Board of Education during the meeting. Ex-officio members are given the opportunity to make comments, ask questions, and give input on any topic brought before the Board.

Dr. Mary Black, the associate superintendent of CCS’ Student Support Services, introduced ‘Amazing Acts of Character’ honorees Josiah Boyd from Lake Rim Elementary School and Raul Ciriaco Cantoran from Gray’s Creek Middle School. They were chosen from individual school nominations for displaying ‘acts of good character.’ Personal congratulations were extended to Josiah and Raul from each member of the Board.
