October 14, 2014

The Cumberland County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., in the Central Services Board Room, with the following board members present: James McLauchlin, Larry Lancaster, Carrie Sutton, Susan Williams, Michael Boose Alicia Chisolm, Macky Hall and Kim Fisher.  Others present were Superintendent Frank Till, Associate Superintendents Tim Kinlaw, Betty Musselwhite, Ron Phipps, Ricky Lopes, Allison Violette, Joseph Locklear and Mary Black; Board Attorney David Phillips; media representative, representatives of the principals association, Ft. Bragg schools liaison, district PTA representative and representatives of the teacher assistants association.

Vice-Chairman James McLauchlin called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.  Our Pledge of Allegiance was led by Michael Boose, followed by the invocation by Larry Lancaster.

RECOGNITIONS
The Board RECOGNIZED Student Representatives Kathryn Barnes, Student Government representative from Cross Creek Early College High School and Allison Bouldin, Student Government Representative from Howard Health and Life Sciences High School. Kathryn and Allison were given the opportunity to address the Board on a topic of their choice.

The Board RECOGNIZED the following student for Amazing Acts of Character:
Brandon Joseph – Reid Ross Classical School

Vice-Chairman James McLauchlin called for a motion to approve the CONSENT AGENDA.

Upon motion by Kim Fisher, seconded by Larry Lancaster, the following Consent Agenda items were approved by unanimously by the Board.

a) Approval of the Minutes of the September 9, 2014 Board Meeting

b) Approval of the 2014-2015 School Improvement Plans as recommended by the Curriculum Committee

c) Approval of Read to Achieve Local Alternative Assessment as recommended by the Curriculum Committee

d) Approval of Personnel, including Certified, Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Classified, Child Nutrition, Bus Drivers, and Prime Time as recommended by the Personnel Committee

e) Approval of Leaves of Absence as recommended by the Personnel Committee

f) Approval of Administrative Recommendations as recommended by the Personnel Committee

g) Approval of Renewal of Contracts for Superintendent’s Senior Staff as recommended by the Personnel Committee

h) Approval of the 2014-2015 Agreement for SRO Services between County of Cumberland Sheriff’s Dept and Cumberland County Schools as recommended by the Auxiliary Services Committee

i) Approval of Red Ribbon Week Proclamation as recommended by the Student Services Committee

j) Approval of 2015 Priorities for Strengthening and Enhancing Cumberland County Schools as recommended by the Legislative Committee

CLOSING ITEMS

Superintendent’s Update:

Dr. Till shared that our upcoming committee agendas will be rather full with policies, calendars and additional business.

Dr. Till congratulated Dr. Mary Black and Mr. Ruben Reyes on their recent awards for PBIS.

Chairman’s Update:

Dr. McLauchlin invited everyone to attend the Reading Rocks! event to be held on October 18th starting at 8:30 am in Festival Park.

He reminded everyone that our November Board meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 12th due to the November 11th Veterans Day holiday.

Dr. McLauchlin thanked everyone for attending the meeting tonight.

With no further business the meeting adjourned at 6:55 pm.
