Resolution Supporting the Establishment of Public Education Gets Approval
The nine-member Board approved a resolution supporting the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the establishment of public education in North Carolina. It was resolved that “without hesitation the Cumberland County School Board of Education affirms their belief that public schools in North Carolina are every child’s chance and every community’s future and pledges their continued advocacy in word and deed for the sacred institution.” According to the resolution, there are more than 2,500 public schools open throughout the state serving over 1.5 million students. Williamsburg Elementary in Rockingham County opened as North Carolina’s first public school on January 20, 1840.
