January 14, 2014

The Cumberland County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at 6:30 p.m., in the Central Services Board Room, with the following board members present: Greg West, James McLauchlin, Larry Lancaster, Carrie Sutton, Susan Williams, Michael Boose, Kim Fisher, Alicia Chisolm and Macky Hall.  Others present were Superintendent Frank Till, Associate Superintendents Tim Kinlaw, Betty Musselwhite, Ron Phipps, Allison Violette, Ricky Lopes, Joseph Locklear and Mary Black; Board Attorney David Phillips; Executive Director Patricia Hollingsworth; media representative, representatives of the principals association and representatives of the teacher assistants.  

Chairman Greg West called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.  Our Pledge of Allegiance was led by James McLauchlin, followed by the invocation by Larry Lancaster.

The Board heard from two speakers during the Public Forum portion of the meeting:

The Board RECOGNIZED Student Representatives Alexandra Bright, Student Government representative from Seventy-First High School and Shelby Huseby, Student Government representative from A.B. Wilkins High School. Alexandra and Shelby were given the opportunity to address the Board on a topic of their choice.

The Board recognized the following students for Amazing Acts of Character:

           Judah Dahlman – Alderman Road Elementary

Alyssa Naudin – Eastover Central Elementary

Dominique Birch – A.B. Wilkins High School

Elise and Enise Lee – Westover High School

Narissa Rivera – Westover High School

Chairman Greg West called for a motion to approve the CONSENT AGENDA

Upon motion by Kim Fisher, seconded by Alicia Chisolm, the following Consent Agenda items were approved by unanimously by the Board.

3.01 CONSIDER Approval of the Minutes of the December 10, 2013 Board Meeting

3.02 CONSIDER Release of Certain Students

3.03 CONSIDER Approval of Certificate of Recognition for Postal Mail Carriers as recommended by the Curriculum Committee

3.04 CONSIDER Approval of 2014 National School Counselor Proclamation as recommended by the Student Support Services Committee

3.05 CONSIDER Approval of the 2014-2015 Calendars as recommended by the Student Support Services Committee

3.06 CONSIDER Approval of Personnel, including Certified, Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Classified, Child Nutrition, Bus Drivers, and Prime Time as recommended by the Personnel Committee

3.07 CONSIDER Approval of Leaves of Absence Requests as recommended by the Personnel Committee

3.08 CONSIDER Approval of Special Leaves of Absence Requests as recommended by the Personnel Committee

3.09 CONSIDER Approval of Administrative Recommendation as recommended by the Personnel Committee



Superintendent’s Update:
Dr. Till shared information pertaining to his Jan 13, 2014 meeting with legislators. He said it was a positive meeting and hopes it will produce some relief for the challenges school systems currently face.

On behalf of the Board, Dr. Till presented a framed certificate to Mr. Greg West and thanked him for his service as the 2013 Vice-Chairman. Also on behalf of the Board, Dr. Till presented a gavel plaque to Mrs. Alicia Chisolm and thanked her for her service as the 2013 Chairman.

Chairman’s Update:
Mr. West thanked the students, parents, school personnel and other representatives for supporting CCS and attending tonight’s meeting. He and Dr. McLauchlin look forward to another successful year.

Mr. West reminded everyone of the January 20, 2014 holiday. Our schools and offices will be closed.

Meeting adjourned at 7:00 pm.
