Board Gives Proclamations Approval
The Board pledged its support in proclaiming April 2013 as The Month of the Military Child in the Cumberland County Schools.
As stated in the proclamation, recognition of the observance supports the school system “paying tribute to military children for their commitment, their struggles, and their unconditional support of our troops because when parents serve in the military, their kids serve, too.” Activities are being planned at schools throughout April that honor, support, and thank military children.
April 2013 was also proclaimed by the Board as North Carolina Child Abuse Prevention Month. The proclamation calls on all citizens, community agencies, faith groups, medical facilities, elected leaders, and businesses to increase their participation in efforts to support children and families thereby preventing child abuse and strengthening local communities.
Student government leaders Sierra Tolbert from Gray’s Creek High School and Eshany Edwards from Cross Creek Early College High School served as ex-officio members of the Cumberland County Board of Education during the meeting. Ex-officio members are given the opportunity to make comments, ask questions, and give input on any topic brought before the Board.
Betty Musselwhite, the associate superintendent of School Support, introduced the March Amazing Acts of Character honorees, Zoe Vassillion from Stoney Point Elementary School and Hunter Hinen from Sunnyside Elementary School. They were chosen from individual school nominations for displaying ‘acts of good character.’ Personal congratulations were extended to both students from members of the Board.
