Cumberland County Board of Education
The Cumberland County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:30 p.m., in the Board Room, with the following Board members present: Larry Lancaster, Alicia Chisolm, Carrie Sutton, Macky Hall, James McLauchlin, Michael Boose, Kim Fisher and Greg West. Others present were Superintendent Frank Till, Associate Superintendents Ricky Lopes, Tim Kinlaw, Betty Musselwhite, Joseph Locklear, Allison Violette and Mary Black; Board Attorney David Phillips; Executive Director Patricia Hollingsworth; Youth Education Support Services Representative Chevelle Godwin, CCAE Representative Wanda Kindell, Pope Field School Liaison Officer Gerald Shonder; media representative, representatives of the principals association and representatives of the teacher assistants.
Chairman Alicia Chisolm called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Michael Boose, followed by the invocation by Kim Fisher.
The Board heard from two speakers during the Public Forum:

The Board RECOGNIZED Student Representative Tremayne Vickerie, Student Government Association Representative from Seventy-First High School. Tremayne was given the opportunity to address the Board on a topic of his choice.
The following students were RECOGNIZED for AMAZING ACTS OF CHARACTER:
Davis Ryan – Glendale Elementary School
The Board RECOGNIZED Dr. Debra Thompson as the CCS EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN 2012 TEACHER OF EXCELLENCE.
Ms. Yolanda Epps was RECOGNIZED as the 2013 NORTH CAROLINA SECONDARY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR.
Chairman Alicia Chisolm called for a motion to approve the CONSENT AGENDA.
Upon motion by Kim Fisher, seconded by Michael Boose, the following Consent Agenda items were approved by unanimously by the Board.
a) CONSIDER Approval of the MINUTES of the December 11, 2012 Board Meeting
b) CONSIDER RELEASE OF CERTAIN STUDENTS
c) CONSIDER Approval of the RESOLUTION FOR ADDITIONAL QSCB FUNDED PROJECTS as recommended by the Auxiliary Services Committee
d) CONSIDER Approval of the 2013 NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK PROCLAMATION as recommended by the Student Support Services Committee
e) CONSIDER Approval of PERSONNEL, including Certified, Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Classified, Child Nutrition, Bus Drivers, and Prime Time as recommended by the Personnel Committee
f) CONSIDER Approval of LEAVES OF ABSENCE REQUESTS as recommended by the Personnel Committee
g) CONSIDER Approval of SPECIAL LEAVES OF ABSENCE REQUESTS as recommended by the Personnel Committee
h) CONSIDER – Approval of ADMINISTRATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS as recommended by the Personnel Committee
i) CONSIDER Approval of PROPOSED BOARD POLICIES (SET 16) – FIRST READING as recommended by the Policy/Student Assignment Committee
j) CONSIDER Approval of PROPOSED BOARD POLICIES (SET 15) – SECOND READING as recommended by the Policy/Student Assignment Committee
k) CONSIDER Approval of RESCINDING CERTAIN BOARD POLICIES as recommended by the Policy/Student Assignment Committee
Dr. Till shared information he received at the Legislative Retreat held in Pinehurst on Jan 7, 2013.
Dr. Till has attended regular meetings with Superintendent June Atkinson. He will update the Board on the session during the Feb 5th Retreat.
Alicia Chisolm presented a plaque to Larry Lancaster in appreciation of his service as the 2012 Chairman of the Board of Education.
Larry Lancaster presented Alicia Chisolm with a framed certificate in appreciation of her service as the 2012 Vice Chairman of the Board of Education.
Mrs. Chisolm thanked everyone for attending the meeting and with no further business adjourned at 7:00 pm.
