Lunch Price Increase Approved
Effective July 1, the price of meals served in cafeterias across the school district will increase by $.05.
Board Continues Support of Temporary Shelters
Members of the Board approved a memorandum of understanding between the Cumberland County Board of Education, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland County Emergency Services, Cumberland County department of Social Services, and the American Red Cross to provide facilities for the mass sheltering of people during a potential disaster or for those who may need temporary housing as a result of a disaster, natural or man-made. The shelters will be located in schools mutually agreed upon by the five entities. The memorandum of agreement is renewed every four years.
High School Baseball Stadium Gets a Name
Carter Smith Stadium is the new name for the baseball stadium at Cape Fear High School, as approved by the Board. The outdoor sports venue is named after the late Carter Smith, a long-time resident of Vander and staunch supporter of the athletic program at the school. The Legacy of Mr. Carter Smith reads: “The impact of Carter Smith will not soon be forgotten. He lives in the hearts of his family and the athletes you see today…We cannot show enough gratitude toward Carter Smith and the work he has left behind…His endless support and dedication to the baseball program can never be duplicated!”
Student government leader Stephanie Wall from Reid Ross Classical High School served as the ex-officio member of the Cumberland County Board of Education during the May 15 meeting. Ex-officio members are given the opportunity to make comments, ask questions, and give input on any topic brought before the Board.
Betty Musselwhite, the associate superintendent of School Support, introduced April’s Amazing Acts of Character honorees Zoe Ferriol from Howard Hall Elementary School, John and James Faatz from Gallberry Farm Elementary School, and Jatoi Sellers from Hope Mills Middle School. The students, chosen from individual school nominations for displaying ‘acts of good character,’ were also recognized by the Board.
