Cumberland County Board of Education
The Cumberland County Board of Education met in regular session on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at 6:30 p.m., in the Board Room, with all board members present: Larry Lancaster, Alicia Chisolm, Michael Boose, Carrie Sutton, Kim Fisher, Macky Hall, James McLauchlin, Mary Emily Royal, and Greg West. Others present were Superintendent Frank Till, Associate Superintendents Mary Black, Tim Kinlaw, Ricky Lopes, Betty Musselwhite, Joseph Locklear and Allison Violette, Assistant Superintendent Ron Phipps; Board Attorney David Phillips; CCAE President Wanda Kindell, Fort Bragg Schools Youth Education Support Services Director Glenda Mack, UniServ Director Lagratta Mitchell, representatives of the principals association, representatives of the teacher assistants, and a representative of the media.
Chairman Larry Lancaster called the meeting to order. Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mary Emily Royal, followed by Carrie Sutton giving the invocation.
Board members heard from one speaker during the Public Forum:
Mr. Jimmy Mask spoke, representing the principal and assistant principals association.
The Board RECOGNIZED Student Representatives Alexandra Patterson, Student Body President at Fuller Performance Learning Center and Jordan Knox, Student Body President at Seventy-First High School. Alexandra and Jordan were given the opportunity to address the Board on a topic of their choice.
The Board RECOGNIZED Mr. Richard Bailey for being named the Carolina Panthers’ High School Football Coach of the Year.
The following students received RECOGNITION for AMAZING ACTS OF CHARACTER:
Maxwell Lancaster – Stoney Point Elementary School
Katelin Bookard – Long Hill Elementary School
Stephanie Gelin – Pine Forest High School
Mr. Lancaster called for a motion to approve the CONSENT AGENDA.
Upon motion by Michael Boose seconded by Macky Hall, the following
Consent Agenda items were approved unanimously:
a) Approval of the Minutes of the December 13, 2011 Board Meeting
b) Approval of Calendar change for Reid Ross Classical School from year round to a traditional calendar for one year (2012-2013) to complete facility renovations
c) Approval of Budget Amendments
d) Approval of CCS 2012 National School Counseling Week Proclamation
e) Approval of Personnel, including Certified, Teachers, Teacher Assistants, Classified, Child Nutrition, Bus Drivers, and Prime Time
f) Approval of Leaves of Absence Requests
g) Approval of Special Leaves of Absence Requests
h) Approval of Administrative Recommendations
Mr. Ricky Lopes presented an additional budget amendment for Board approval
Upon a motion by Mary Emily Royal and seconded by James McLauchlin, the Board voted unanimously to approve the additional Budget Amendment as presented by Mr. Lopes.
Dr. Till shared plans to have another “Back to School” event at the Crown Coliseum. The speaker this year will be Alan November.
Plans are being made for a Technology demonstration to the Board at a future Committee meeting.
Our Elementary Education Department has scheduled a day-long retreat to be used for collaborative planning.
Board Member Update:
Michael Boose thanked Dr. Till, Mr. Kinlaw and others for the generosity shown to the Boys and Girls Club.
Carrie Sutton presented a certificate of appreciation to Mr. Larry Lancaster for his service to Cumberland County Schools as 2011 School Board Vice-Chairman.
Larry Lancaster presented Carrie Sutton with a gavel plaque in appreciation of her service to Cumberland County Schools as 2011 School Board Chairman.
Mr. Lancaster thanked everyone for attending the Board meeting and shared his commitment for a successful year.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:06 pm.
